MACED releases report on building an entrepreneur support system in Kentucky.

Anyone who has spent time in Kentucky knows that it’s a special place.

Yet Kentucky’s approach to economic development doesn’t do enough to build on our many strengths. Focused too narrowly on cheap costs and industrial recruitment, it neglects strategies and investments that could unlock Kentucky’s potential. The results are low per capita income, persistently high poverty and avoidable sacrifices to our land and water.

Kentucky can do better by turning onto the High Road of economic development.

Taking the High Road means working harder to tap the talent of Kentucky’s people and build on while sustaining the assets of our communities. It means doing more to support Kentuckians as entrepreneurs, workers and community leaders. Kentucky can create a better and more prosperous future by putting new energy behind a new approach.

The High Road Initiative is an effort to bring together a broad based network of organizations, businesses and people working together to build a strong economy across Kentucky. Through research, public education and policy reform, we seek to identify successful ways to move our commonwealth forward. The initiative is led by Kentuckians For The Commonwealth (KFTC) and the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED).

1. Increase support for homegrown entrepreneurs and small businesses

2. Increase support for promising economic sectors like clean energy and sustainable forestry

3. Create an economic development system with more openness, accountability and long-term planning
